Umphrey’s Busts Out The Clash At Chucktown Ball Closer, Announces Three-Night Run In Atlanta

first_imgUmphrey’s McGee returned to Charleston, SC last night, for the second night of their own Chucktown Ball. The southern city event started as a series of benefit concerts in Charleston last year, after a hometown mass shooting stirred band members who live in the city. This year, the band took the Ball to the next level, bringing on special guest musicians in a larger venue, the North Charleston Coliseum & Performing Arts Center. You can listen to Friday night’s performance here.Saturday night’s concert-goers were treated to an extreme evening of music, with electronic duo The Floozies kicking things off as the night’s support. When UM took the stage, fans were treated to an all-original set of music, including an extensive “Miami Virtue” into “Mad Love” jam. The first set closed with a fan-favorited “2×2” rocker, which featured teases of Eye of the Tiger’s “Survivor”, Pink Floyd‘s “Another Brick in the Wall”, and John Coltrane‘s “A Love Supreme”.The second set opened with a stand-out version of “Life During Exodus”, a mashing of Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime” and Bob Marley’s “Exodus,” with Frank Zappa’s “City of Tiny Lites” and Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4.” The mashup is featured on their upcoming album, ZONKEY, which comes out this Fall. Sticking to the tease-heavy theme of Saturday night’s setlist, the band’s performance of “Bad Friday” included teases of Michael Jackson‘s “Billie Jean.”Toward the end of the set, the Chicago-based jam greats busted out “Rock The Casbah” for the 11th time in their nearly twenty year career. The Clash cover has not been performed by the sextet since September of 2015 at the Forest Park in St. Louis, MO. The Casbah classic led into a “Drums” jam, and then into the “Hurt Bird Bath” set closer, which incorporated teases of Bach‘s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”, before Umphrey’s McGee returned to the stage for a “Puppet String” encore.Come November 11th, Umphrey’s McGee will release ZONKEY, a new studio album that features recordings of the band’s famed mash up tracks. Having already released versions of “Life During Exodus” and “National Loser Anthem”, which features a mash-up of Radiohead, Beck, and Phil Collins, last night’s performance was pure indication that this release will be full of surprises.Following last night’s show, keyboardist Joel Cummins announced from the stage that the band will return to Atlanta, GA for a three-night stand at The Tabernacle over Martin Luther King weekend in January. He confirmed this statement with a tweet earlier today: Umphrey’s McGee @ Chuck Town Ball, North Charleston Coliseum North Charleston, SC 9/24/16:Set I: October Rain > Speak Up, Miami Virtue > Mad Love, Higgins, Preamble > Mantis, 2×2*Set II: Life During Exodus^, All In Time > Prowler > All In Time, Bad Friday^^, Rock the Casbah > Drums > Hurt Bird Bath^^^Enc: Puppet StringNotes: *with Eye of the Tiger (Survivor) jam and Another Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd) and A Love Supreme (John Coltrane) teases^with 25 or 6 to 4 (Chicago) tease^^with Billie Jean (Michael Jackson) tease^^^With Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Bach) tease[Setlist via AllThingsUmphreys]last_img read more

Adris bought Hotel Marjan in Split

first_imgAfter more than ten years of agony, the Marjan Hotel in Split was finally sold to the Adris Group for HRK 324 million. Željko Kerum bought the Marjan Hotel in 2005 through a tender. He paid 170 million kuna, three times more than the requested 57 million kuna. Less than four years later, a contract was signed with the Hilton, while Kerum became mayor a few months later. The works on “Marjan” were soon interrupted, and in 2015 everything ended with the bankruptcy of the company “Adriatic. The purchase of Adris was expected, since in December 2017 Adria resort, a company within the Adris group, concluded an Agreement on the sale of all receivables with associated mortgages on real estate owned by the bankrupt company Adriatic dd from Split. So that another investor interested in the Marjan hotel appeared, then he should additionally buy receivables from Adris, which was unlikely. Namely, yesterday until midnight was the deadline for submitting bids through the Fina electronic public auction, and only one bid was received from Adris, writes Jutarnji list. The sale has been waiting for four years, as long as the bankruptcy proceedings of “Adriatica” last in the Commercial Court in Split, in whose portfolio this unfinished building on the West Coast is. As previously announced, Adris will invest an additional two billion kuna in the tourist part of the Group by 2021, which will put 95 percent of hotel capacity at the highest level of supply.last_img read more

Neville backs player quota system

first_imgA quota system should be introduced to the Premier League to help the home nations, according to England coach Gary Neville, who fears the top flight has passed its “tipping point” when it comes to foreign players. The former Manchester United full-back, who combines his role as a television pundit with assisting England boss Roy Hodgson, is concerned about the direction the British and Irish national sides are heading in. And citing the start of his own career as an example when clubs were limited to the amount of overseas players they could field, Neville has suggested an inversion of that system whereby managers would have to pick players from the home nations. Speaking to the Guardian, Neville said: “Last week I looked at a list of players signed into the Premier League. I like to think I’m well-read on football but, honestly, I’d never heard of 50-60 per cent of them. “All right, we might unearth lots of talent from abroad. And some fantastic foreign players and managers have enhanced British football no end. But I used the phrase ‘tipping point’ last season and I feel we’re going too far right now. “We need to protect our English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish and Irish national teams by giving more boys from those countries more opportunities. “England not winning trophies, or even reaching the semi-finals of major competitions any longer, is a problem for us. “It’s also a problem for the Premier League, which seems behind the German and Spanish leagues. “The way I see it, British football clubs and managers, the Football Association and the Premier League need to come together as one. We all want a successful group of home nations which produce more domestic players. “It’s not just England. Look what’s happened to Scottish football. Look at the Republic of Ireland. Roy Keane, Niall Quinn, Steve Staunton, Paul McGrath and Kevin Moran always played on English soil and in the Premier League. “We need to come together and get back to a point where there is a quota system of some kind. I know people say you can’t implement this because of European law but where there’s a will there’s a way.” Neville made his name at Old Trafford as part of a side heavily made up of young talent. The 38-year-old grew up and played with the likes of David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and brother Phil, but feels that had he been trying to make a breakthrough in this era, he may have struggled. “When I came through in the mid-1990s there was a rule where only a limited number of foreign players could be included in a team during European competition,” he added. “We benefited from that because, as young British players, we got opportunities. We need to get back something of that ilk – where each team has three or four players from the home countries at the start of every match. “My chances of making it as a pro footballer at the age of 18 in 2013 would be a lot less than 20 years ago. A talented 18-year-old today has to hope he’s at the right club with the right manager who believes in young players. But it’s become so short-term. “The average manager has no time to think about the youth team – let alone create a structure and philosophy at the club. It’s a vicious circle and one that disappoints me about the modern game. I’m a traditionalist and think people should be given time.” Press Associationlast_img read more
