Back in 2006, architect engineer Peter Van Impe was searching for a place to accomodate his newly founded architects and engineers office, AST 77 architects and engineers office. He stumbled upon a post-war townhouse located at the edge of the city park of Tienen. After some research this lot, of just 60 square meters, turned out to be suited for construction. Although others never considered this small piece of land to be a usable building lot, Peter transformed it into a spacious house/office by upholding the less is more principle. Save this picture!Courtesy of Separate RealityThe new-built house is an example of how to use every square meter to the fullest. The facade exists out of wall-high window panels, that can be fully opened on sunny days. Inside, a steel perforated black staircase connects office and living spaces while keeping and reinforcing the transparency-principle of the house. Save this picture!Courtesy of Separate RealityWhereas the office is made up of a black and white colour scheme, the living spaces uses warmer materials such as bamboo grass. The walls are made up out of concrete building blocks painted grey, that slightly change colours depending on the amount and direction of sunligh entering the house. The bedroom and bathroom are placed on the highest level, which also includes a roof terrace with a view on one of the boulevards of Tienen. Atrium House is a vacation home for a family of three generations on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. It is built on a slight ridge that marks the former location of the coastline a thousand years ago. In relation to the open and expansive landscape, the building seems more like a low wall than a house. It is built around a completely enclosed atrium courtyard that is designed to serve as a fixed point, a sheltered outdoor room. The rest of the property is left undisturbed as a meadow where grazing sheep prevent the land from returning to forest.Save this picture!© Åke E: son LindmanSave this picture!Floor PlanSave this picture!© Åke E: son LindmanThe house is narrow, but its openings facing out are wide, giving the interior the character of a niche like shelter in the open space of the landscape. While the roof maintains a consistent elevation throughout the house, the interior floor rises and falls in accordance with the surrounding terrain. This means the height of the ceiling varies within the main spaces, which are arranged in a continuous ring around the atrium. Within this continuous space, the smaller rooms are assembled in a number of solid blocks.Save this picture!© Åke E: son LindmanSave this picture!Façades – SectionSave this picture!© Åke E: son LindmanInspired by the impressive materiality of Gotland’s vernacular agricultural architecture, the masonry construction has a natural plaster colour that has been mixed with carbon black, exterior metal parts made of oxidised zinc, and oak doors as well as windows that have been treated with tar oil. The large sliding glass windows are mounted on the surface of the exterior walls, according to the same principle as many barn doors. Also the interior doors are surface‐mounted, allowing the walls to appear unbroken.Save this picture!© Åke E: son LindmanSave this picture!Detail SectionSave this picture!© Åke E: son LindmanProject gallerySee allShow lessSolo House / OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van SeverenSelected ProjectsCentral Embassy in Bangkok / AL_ASelected Projects Share CopyHouses•Sweden ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/871585/atrium-house-tham-and-videgard-arkitekter Clipboard Save this picture!© Åke E: son Lindman+ 17 Share Sweden Atrium House / Tham & Videgård Arkitekter “COPY” Architects: Tham & Videgård Arkitekter Year Completion year of this architecture project center_img Atrium House / Tham & Videgård ArkitekterSave this projectSaveAtrium House / Tham & Videgård Arkitekter Projects 2010 Manufacturers Brands with products used in this architecture project ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/871585/atrium-house-tham-and-videgard-arkitekter Clipboard “COPY” CopyAbout this officeTham & Videgård ArkitekterOfficeFollowProductsWoodConcrete#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesSwedenPublished on May 19, 2017Cite: “Atrium House / Tham & Videgård Arkitekter” 19 May 2017.
