Following a perfect outing at the junior championship this past weekend, a few of Guyana’s senior badminton players have shown remarkable grit as the senior championships opened on Monday.The Guyanese senior badminton team displays their home flag in SurinameBeing hosted in Paramaribo, Suriname, that country’s Director of Sport, Mitchell Kisoor, and the President of the Surinamese Olympic Association, Mr Ramon TJON-A-FAT, were present at the auspicious opening ceremony, before the players from around the Caribbean took to the courts.The Guyanese contingent consisting of Narayan Ramdhani, Jonathan Mangra, Darrell Carpenay, Akili Haynes, Tyrese Jeffrey, and recently crowned Junior Champion Priyanna Ramdhani, got off to a flying start in the first round.Priyanna RamdhaniNarayan Ramdhani cruised to a victory over Amir Mahabir of Trinidad and Tobago in straight sets, 21-6 and 21-2. Jonathan Mangra followed suit in straight sets with a win over Denzel Sweet of Suriname 21-11 and 21-10. Darrell Carpenay later defeated Jai Luo of Suriname: 21-13, 19-21, 21-13. However, Akili Haynes did not have the same fortune, losing to Mitchel Wongsodikromo of Suriname: 21-8, 21-6 and Tyrese Jeffrey overpowered by Kevin Yao Lin Zou of Suriname: 21-9, 21-11.Over in the women’s singles, Priyanna continued on her winning streak defeating Imani Mangroe of Suriname: 18-21, 21-7, 21-13.In round two of the men’s singles, Darell Carpenay was knocked out of contention by Gilmar Jones of Suriname: 21-7, 21-6. On the other hand, in an unfortunate pairing, the Guyanese males remaining in the running were pitted against each other in their round two matchup.Narayan Ramdhani got the better of Jonathan Mangra 21-17, 21-11.In the first mixed doubles round, the Ramdhani sibling paired up to hand a loss to Gilmar Jones & Rugshaar Ishaak of Suriname: 24-22, 11-21, 17-21.Narayan will continue his quest for the men’s singles title with a matchup against Robert Mann of Luxembourg, whilst his younger sister plays Monyata Riviera of Barbados in the Women’s singles.In the men’s doubles Akili Haynes and Tyrese Jeffery will team up against Shae Michael Martin and Dakeil Jonathan of Barbados. Narayan Ramdhani and Jonathan Mangra will face off with Jia Luo and Alain Toney of Suriname in the same category.Later on, the Ramdhani pair will enter the second round of the mixed doubles against Suriname’s Soren Opti and Mary-Ann Zhong.
