Last year, Cargill inaugurated its first wet corn milling plant in India, set up with an investment of $100 million.The company has inaugurated a new dairy feed mill in Bathinda, Punjab, and has opened its largest business services centre in Bengaluru in 2015, employing around 2,000 people.The latest announcement was made by CEO of Cargill Asia Pacific Peter Van Deursen at the World Food India Conference.“India is an important market for us and this increased investment demonstrates our commitment to the country and the development of its agriculture and food processing industry,” he said. “With the growing population and changing consumer trends, Cargill is committed to nourishing the people of India in a safe, sustainable and responsible manner.“The Ministry for Food Processing Industries is to be complimented for organising an event the scale of World Food India as it lets us collaborate with partners in the public and private sectors to deliver to our customers what consumers want.”Cargill started operations in India in 1987, with businesses in refined oils, food ingredients, grain and oilseeds, cotton, animal nutrition, industrial specialties and trade structured finance.Share with your network: Tags: CargillIndia

FoodBev spoke with Susannah Bolton, the director of knowledge exchange at AHDB, to find out more about curated programmes that can improve approaches to agricultural business. Running a business as a farmer can pose challenges. Setting up Strategic Farms, AHDB’s answer to a farming incubator scheme, was an answer to solving these.“Farmers face huge challenges running their businesses,” Bolton says. “They need to increase productivity whilst complying with regulation and challenges posed by volatile prices, pests, diseases and the weather. “They are communicated at from all sides, with many people trying to sell products and services, but what we have found is that farmers learn best from each other and where we can build a community of trust around our strategic farms, we see more and more people recognising that they are a valuable source of information and debate.”Programmes like these can offer farmers an opportunity to network and learn from other individuals in similar situations. “They give farmers the opportunity to share ideas and discuss with their peers. They can benchmark their performance and at the same time receive valuable guidance on how to improve.”As well as entrepreneurial expertise, agricultural hubs like Strategic Farms can guide companies on how to improve processes to enhance the environmental sustainability of farms. “Undoubtedly,” Bolton continues, “good business management and good environmental management go hand in hand. It was brought to the notice of the customs authorities by a ‘whistleblower’. Giving details of the case, the officials said that one of the accused stopped the Uzbek woman upon her arrival from Tashkent on May 3 for checking of her baggage for any suspected smuggled goods.He then took her to a room that has no CCTV camera and spent about half an hour there without being accompanied by any women customs officer, they said.It is alleged that the superintendent, who is in his early 50s, sexually assaulted the woman, who had come here for treatment of her sister’s child admitted at a private hospital, the officials said.The woman had lodged a complaint with the customs authorities but retracted later after she is alleged to have been threatened of being fabricated in a false case of smuggling, besides threat to her life by the accused officer, they said.
